CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell in four sets to Memphis on Sunday afternoon inside Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats move to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Freshman Avry Tatum tied her career high in kills (18) and hit at an efficient clip of .417. Freshman Carly Glendinning added 16 kills while senior Payton Frederick registered 18 digs on defense.
With her ninth assist of the match, sophomore setter Emme Madden surpassed 1,000 assists for her career. It took her only 29 career matches to achieve the feat. She currently sits seventh in program history in assists with 1,021 (rally scoring era).
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Cincinnati pulled within two (12-10) before Memphis went on a 4-1 scoring run (17-12). The Bearcats responded with a run of their own to tie up the set at 19. UC took the lead after a Frederick service ace and Memphis error but the Tigers scored four straight to win the set, 26-24.
SET 2 | Cincinnati dominated the second set, 25-10, to even the match at one set apiece. UC jumped out to an early 10-3 lead thanks to a 7-0 scoring run. The Bearcats' block came out in the frame, stuffing the Tigers seven times. Redshirt senior Kailea Carrier had four blocks in the set.
SET 3 | Memphis used a 6-0 scoring run to secure the third set win, 25-20. Memphis hit .364 compared to UC's mark of .160. Madden found Abby Walker for back-to-back kills to eclipse the 1,000-assist mark in the set.
SET 4 | Memphis carried the momentum into the fourth and final set, winning the stanza by a score of 25-22. The Tigers led by as many as six before the Bearcats pulled within two at 24-22. The Tigers scored on the next play to secure the victory.
