CINCINNATI – Megan Smith and Maddie Swingle tallied goals as the University of Cincinnati women's soccer team secured a 2-0 win over Houston at Gettler Stadium on Thursday.

With the win, the Bearcats improve to 6-2-6, 2-1-3 AAC on the season.

After the two teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the first half, Vanessa DiNardo played a pass through the attacking third to Smith, who controlled the touch and redirected the ball past the goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the season to take an early 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

The Bearcats outshot the Cougars 10-5, 6-2 in corner kicks to command the lead at the half for the seventh time this season.

The second half shared a similar script as both backlines limited chances in the final third before Houston found open space in the box in the 54th minute when Anna Rexford shuffled across the posts to deny a one-on-one opportunity and preserve the shutout. Rexford tied a career-high six saves and posted her first clean sheet since Sept. 11.

Cincinnati found insurance in the 81st minute when Sarah Kate Rath sent a ball into the box after a string of passes along the right side of the pitch, where Swingle finished off the great run of play with a strike that found the top left corner of the frame. It marks the first collegiate assist for Rath.

Five of the six points were recorded by freshman on the night.

Cincinnati welcomes South Florida for their home finale on Sunday at 1 p.m.
