MORGANTOWN, W. Va.— The University of Cincinnati swimming and diving team wrapped up its two-day dual against future Big 12 opponent West Virginia on Saturday.
Both Bearcat teams swam well, collecting 12 event wins, but fell short to the Mountaineers. The men's team lost 179-174 while the women fell 237-110.
Junior Hunter Gubeno led the men's team with three event-wins in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard individual medley.
"We put up a good fight racing this weekend and I am proud of our effort," head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said. "The team responded well against our future Big 12 opponent and as we look at what's ahead, I think there are some positive takeaways to help us fine-tune our racing and be ready for our mid-season championship meet."
On Friday, Cincinnati got off to a great start at the Aquatics Center at Mylan Park. UC swept the 100-yard fly with freshman Ella Chown (56.71) and senior Michael Balcerak (48.95) claiming first.
Freshman Grace Gavin (56.17) and Gubeno (49.24) followed suit, and each won the men's and women's 100-yard back.
For the third meet in a row, redshirt senior Conner Funke won the men's 100-yard breast with a time of 55.87. Senior Spencer Sehlhorst collected a win in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:57.47.
On Saturday, the Bearcats claimed the top three spots in the men's 200-yard individual medley. Gubeno won the event with a time of 1:50.65.
Gubeno would finish the meet with three event-wins after claiming first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:46.35.
UC would sweep the 200-yard backstroke after freshman Lily Jones placed first overall with a time of 2:02.09.
Balcerak and Funke each picked up their second event-wins of the meet on day two. Balcerak won the men's 200 freestyle with a time of 1:39.66 and Funke recorded a time of 2:03.14 in the 200 breaststroke.
Junior Tommy Eaton rounded out the event winners for UC with a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.04.
