Cincinnati Swept by SMU

The University of Cincinnati volleyball team was swept by SMU on Sunday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team was swept by SMU on Sunday afternoon inside Moody Coliseum in Dallas, Texas. 

The Bearcats (6-16, 4-8 AAC) could not overcome a strong offensive performance by the Mustangs. SMU hit .315 in the match and was +16 in kills (46-30). UC was held to a .116 hitting percentage. 
 
Cincinnati did see success on the defensive end, registering eight blocks and 46 digs. Freshman Avry Tatum led the Bearcats with 10 kills at a .320 clip to go along with four blocks. Redshirt senior Kailea Carrier added a team-best five blocks.
 
Sophomore Shaye Eggleston (12) and senior Payton Frederick (11) provided double-digit dig performances. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED 
SET 1 | SMU used a 6-0 scoring run to take an 8-2 lead in the first set. The Mustangs then went on a 5-1 spurt to own a nine-point advantage (19-10). The deficit proved too large to overcome as SMU won the set, 25-15. The Bearcats hit -.050 in the opening set compared to SMU's clip of .238. 
 
SET 2 | The Mustangs once again found success in the early going of the second set, jumping out to a 12-7 advantage. The Bearcats began to piece together points, cutting their deficit to two after a kill by Carrier (15-13). SMU would respond with four straight points to cruise to the set-win, 25-17.  
 
SET 3 | Cincinnati put up a strong fight in the third and final set. With Emme Madden behind the service line, UC rattled off four straight points to lead 8-4. The run was highlighted by three kills and a service ace. The two teams then traded points to sit tied at the midway point. The Bearcats went up by two (18-16), before the Mustangs scored five straight points (22-18). SMU held on to win the set, 25-19, and match, 3-0. Tatum put down six of her 10 kills in the frame.
