CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's soccer team secured their first conference win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Temple at Gettler Stadium on Sunday.
With the win, the Bearcats extend their unbeaten streak to five matches and improve 5-1-5, 1-0-2 AAC on the season.
For the second straight match, Cincinnati commanded an early 1-0 lead off the foot of Paige Miller. Vyviene Spaulding connected with Miller on a perfectly placed cross inside the six-yard frame, where the sophomore forward found the bottom right corner of the net off a diving header in the 13th minute.
"That has to be up there for the goal of the year," said head coach Neil Stafford. "That is what Paige Miller does, she puts herself in dangerous positions. Her starting position from the cross was exceptional and she was very quick with her movement for the diving header."
Cincinnati doubled their lead seven minutes later when Emma Schmelzer fired a followed-up set piece past the outstretched arms of the Owls' goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal in the 20th minute. Schmelzer is now the 11th different Bearcat to score this season.
Temple answered in the 61st minute to cut the lead to one.
The match remained within a goal until Cincinnati found some late insurance in the 88th minute. The pair of Miller and Spaulding connected for the second time on the afternoon when Spaulding sent a ball in the final third and Miller redirected the touch inside the left post to make it 3-1.
With the 24-3 advantage this afternoon, the Bearcats have outshot their opponent in eight of 11 matches. The 24 shots match a season-high and the Bearcats remain undefeated at 5-0-3 when possessing the shot advantage.
Cincinnati will be back in the action when the Bearcats travel to take on UCF on Thursday, Oct. 13 in a match that was rescheduled due to Hurricane Ian.
