WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team recorded a program-record 14 blocks, but ultimately fell to Wichita State 61-49 in their American Athletic Conference opener inside Charles Koch Arena on Friday night.
Cincinnati is now 7-7, 0-1 in the AAC on the season.
Junior forward/center Malea Williams finished with a team-high 11 points, seven blocks and four rebounds. In addition to the team total, Williams' seven blocks was also an individual program record.
Senior forward Jadyn Scott turned in a season-high 10 points on 4-7 from the field in 15 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard Braylyn Milton dished out a team-high four assists, while Caitlyn Wilson added eight points.
Senior guard Mya Jackson tallied a season-high seven rebounds, in addition to eight points and three assists.
The score was deadlocked at 15 after the opening 10 minutes as Scott turned in six points in first quarter. The two teams continued to trade baskets early in the second frame before the Bearcats' defense settled in to force ten turnovers and hold their hosts without a field goal for over five minutes of action.
The bench turned in 15 of the 22 first half points, led by eight from Scott and four from Williams.
After the Shockers raced out to a 22-33 lead out of the locker room, the Bearcats used a quick 5-0 spurt to recapture the momentum. Milton found Williams behind the defense on a five-on-four fast break situation for a quick two, before connecting with Caitlyn Wilson for a deep three that cut the deficit to six and forced a Shocker timeout with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter.
The Bearcats held the Shockers to 0-10 from the field for 7:54 minutes of action in the period to trim the margin to five entering the final period. Wilson scored the Bearcats' eight straight points to close out the third period.
Cincinnati used a 7-0 run over 1:44 minutes of action to cut the deficit to six with 3:54 remaining in the fourth, but the score would not get any closer than that as the Bearcats were unable to complete the comeback effort.
Cincinnati will reign in the new year when the Bearcats host Temple on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. ET.
