CINCINNATI -- The No. 68 Cincinnati men's golf team is set for its final tournament before the AAC Championships when it competes in the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
The field takes place at the par-72, 7,157-yard Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. UC will go up against Creighton, Drake, Illinois State, Iowa, Iowa State, James Madison, No. 28 Kansas, Kansas State, Kansas City, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northern Illinois and South Dakota State.
The participating Bearcats include Sam Jean, Joey McCarthy, Ty Gingerich, Clay Amlung and Mason Lenhart.
Jean has held the team's lowest stroke average all year with a 71.48 and has produced a sub-70 round in each of his last three events. Lenhart has really come on the scene lately to card a 5-under 208 at the Mason Rudolph Championship, earning AAC Golfer of the Week honors. The score and his 12th-place finish were season-bests. McCarthy (72.37), Amlung (72.51) and Gingerich (72.66) have also maintained their consistency all year, with Gingerich carding a 7-under over his last three combined tournaments.
UC finished sixth at the challenging Mason Rudolph Championship in its last time out (April 1-3). Four of the five teams ahead in the standings were in the top-50. The Bearcats carded an even-par 284 to close it out, their fifth tournament in which they saved their best for last.
Last year saw the Bearcats claim first, third and fifth-place finishes over their final four tournaments, and they will look to do the same this year in the postseason hunt. UC also had identical finishes in their only other Midwest events this season, all to begin the fall. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
