CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati Athletics Department announced on Monday the grades for the 2022 spring semester as well as the latest Academic Progress Rate numbers.
It's clear the Bearcats continue to achieve high marks in the classroom, breaking academic records, while setting up student-athletes for success after college.
Most impressively, all 16 UC programs posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA with the Bearcats' student-athletes collectively posting a 3.369 GPA for the spring 2022 semester, marking the ninth consecutive semester of a 3.3 or higher departmental GPA.
Cincinnati Athletics had 299 student-athletes (77%) on the honor roll with 217 (56%) earning Dean's List distinction and 54 achieving a 4.0 for the semester.
Led by Executive Senior Associate AD Joe Luckey, Associate AD Keri Thoman and Associate AD Jennifer Sturm, the Student-Athlete Support Staff (SASS) oversaw more than 100 student-athletes graduating during the 2021-22 school year and four Bearcats collect Academic All-America accolades.
"Our mission is to impact the lives of student-athletes and to prepare them to change the world on and off the field," Director of Athletics John Cunningham said. "It gives me great pride to see our department achieving this and our student-athletes' commitment to success in the classroom.
"What's impressive is this is not just one great year or one great semester. We have built a years-long culture here at UC that demands excellence in classroom, graduates student-athletes and produces leaders. That's a credit to our Student-Athlete Support Staff (SASS), which I believe is the best academic staff in the country. It's a credit to the buy-in from our coaches, who emphasize the holistic student-athlete experience. And it's a credit to our student-athletes – they understand what it means to wear the C-Paw and they take pride in being more than just athletes."
Women's tennis (3.895) and men's cross country (3.506) had the highest team GPAs in the department.
Rising senior Lorenz Metz, a First Team All-AAC offensive lineman on UC's football team, collected a 4.0 this spring, a semester after being selected a CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team selection in the fall.
Junior golfer Sam Jean, who qualified for the 2022 NCAA Men's Golf Championship Regional, also earned a 4.0 as a mechanical engineering major.
Rising sophomore volleyball star Abby Walker, the 2021 AAC Freshman of the Year, achieved a 4.0, too.
Women's swimming and diving had nine Bearcats achieve a 4.0, while women's track and field saw eight athletes reach the perfect mark.

For the second year in a row, Cincinnati had 11 teams achieve a perfect single season score of 1,000 in the Academic Progress Rate (APR), including the Bearcats' football team, which reached the perfect mark for the first time in school history, while also advancing to the College Football Playoff and winning a school-record 13 games.
Cincinnati matched its highest-ever single year overall APR score (994) for the entire athletic department for the 2020-21 academic year, matching the record set in 2019-20.
