University of Cincinnati track and field's Steven McElroy finished won the 400-meter dash at the USATF U20 Championships.

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Cincinnati track and field's Steven McElroy won the 400-meter dash U20 national championship on Saturday at Hayward Field at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships.

McElroy, a Pickerington, Ohio, native, clocked a school- and meet-record time of 44.93 from lane five, running away from the field and qualifying for the World Athletics U20 Championships, which will be held in Cali, Columbia during the first week of August. 
 
McElroy's time shatters his own school record (45.57) and cements the Bearcat as the United States' premier 400m runner under the age of 20. 
 
McElroy's championship on Saturday caps an incredible freshman season. He won the 400 at the 2022 indoor and outdoor American Athletic Conference Championships, while qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2022.
 
Additionally, Cincinnati's Kennedy Marable competed in the triple jump on Saturday at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships – also at Hayward Field.
 
Marable's mark of 12.90m (42-04) placed her 12th.
 
Bearcat Annika Kinley rounded out UC competition on Saturday, placing sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.70m (5-7) at the U20 Championships.
 
On Thursday, UC great Annette Echikunwoke finished third in the hammer throw at the USATF Outdoor Championships.
 
Echikunwoke's toss of 73.76 meters (242-0) at Hayward Field qualified the UC alum for July's World Championships, which will also be held in Eugene.
 
Echikunwoke won the NCAA title for UC in the weight throw in 2017.
