TicketsCINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball program announced on Friday that its annual home tournament will be renamed Tribute to #10 in honor of former volleyball student-athlete and coach Stephanie Meinig-Rosfeld.
Meinig-Rosfeld was a standout middle hitter for the Bearcats from 1997-00, who also served as an assistant coach for the program before passing away in 2004.
"We are honored to host the inaugural Tribute to #10 tournament," said head coach Molly Alvey. "The idea came from working with Stephanie's family and friends on finding a way to honor her legacy as a Bearcat. Stephanie was not only an amazing performer on the court, but as I have learned, a truly amazing friend and teammate to all. This tournament is a way to celebrate Stephanie, and her passion and enthusiasm for Cincinnati volleyball. This will be an annual opportunity to bring our volleyball alumni together on the sidelines once again, rooting for their Bearcats."
A two-time First Team All-Conference USA selection, Meinig-Rosfeld still holds the C-USA record for total blocks (593). She also holds Cincinnati's record for most games played (502) and ranks second in program history in total blocks (593) and block assists (518).
The Bearcats will open the 2022 season with the Tribute to #10 tournament on Aug. 26-28, hosting Illinois State and Dayton on Friday and Florida State on Sunday. The tribute match in which the program will honor and celebrate Meinig-Rosfeld will take place on Friday night when Cincinnati plays Dayton at 6:30 p.m.
"Stephanie was my first recruit at Cincinnati," said former head coach Laura Alford. "She made an immediate impact as a blocker her freshman year. While she was a dominant force on the court, what I most appreciated about Stephanie was her ability to bring people together. Steph's sense of humor, contagious laugh and genuine kindness made everyone feel like they belonged. She competed like crazy, expected the best and led with love. Bearcat Steph was a role model for our daughter, a great student and hard worker. We are all better people because No. 10 chose to be a Bearcat."
Meinig-Rosfeld was an integral part of helping the Bearcats to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, the first two as a player and the last three as a member of head coach Reed Sunahara's coaching staff. Prior to the 2003 season, she was elevated to top assistant.
"Steph was the person you wanted on your team when it was tight in the last set," said teammate Jill (Waltemeyer) Evans. "Steph was the person you wanted running beside you on the last wind sprint when you had nothing left in the tank. Steph was the person you wanted to sit by in study hall. Steph was the person you wanted standing next to you at your wedding. Steph was the person you wanted to talk to when something was tough in your life. Steph was the person you prayed you were with when your favorite song came on in the car driving home from practice! Steph was my best friend! Steph was a Bearcat!"
Meinig-Rosfeld graduated from UC in 2001 with a degree in health promotions. She married Doug Rosfeld, a football letterwinner, and the couple welcomed their first son, William, into the world in May 2004. The Washington, Ill., native attended Washington Community High School.
