CINCINNATI – Cincinnati football head coach Scott Satterfield officially introduced associate head coach and defensive coordinator Bryan Brown and offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Tom Manning during a press conference on Monday.
The Bearcats also announced the additions of nine transfers.
It's a time of transition for a Bearcats' football team that has won the fifth-most games of any program in the country the last five years.
However, UC adds Satterfield and his staff – many of whom came from a Louisville program that quickly rebuilt – going from 2-10 to a 8-5 in Year 1 and consistently competing near the top of the ACC.
In 2022, Louisville picked up six wins over teams with at least 8 wins – finishing behind only national champion Georgia, who had seven.
Fans and Cincinnati's defensive players will be excited for Brown's defense. Under Brown's direction, the Cardinals led the nation with 50 sacks in 2022 and allowed only 19.2 points (No. 11 nationally) and 331 yards per game (no. 24).
Brown has coached with Satterfield since 2012.
"He has had many opportunities over the years but fortunate for me, he has been able to stick with me," Satterfield said. "When we took over at Louisville, defensively, (the team) was not very good and you can look back at those stats but when we finished up last year at Louisville, we led the country in sacks and were top 25 in many other categories. So, a tremendous job in the turnaround defensively there and an exciting brand of football."
Manning coached seven NFL draft picks at Iowa State and served as offensive coordinator for some of the greatest teams in Cyclones' history, including the Fiesta Bowl champions in 2020.
"Tom Manning is a guy that I talked to early in the process, from the state of Ohio," Satterfield said. "He's from Youngstown. A lot of pride in this state and really knows this state well. I first met him when he was a GA at Toledo in 2009. I am very impressed by him at that stage of his career, and it just has followed him throughout the years. We have kept in touch since then and he has been at Iowa State, Indianapolis Colts, and of course Toledo. But he does a tremendous job and has run some of the best offenses in Iowa State history if you go back and look. Brock Purdy was a quarterback that they had and did a tremendous job and won a ton of games there. The fact that he has been in the Big 12 was another key ingredient that I thought we needed to get on staff. So, bringing him on board here is going to be an asset for us."
Satterfield and his staff held their first team meeting on Sunday to begin the semester. Many of the transfers and seven true freshmen mid-year enrollees are already on campus.
Recruiting and evaluating never stops for coaching staff, either. Satterfield is looking forward to hitting the road to high school across Ohio the next two weekends.
"It starts in our backyard," he said. "A huge emphasis on the city of Cincinnati and within 300 miles for recruiting. We are going back on the road on Friday and blitzing the city. We are sending everybody out within 50 miles right here and hit as many high schools as we can hit."
