GREENVILLE, N.C – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team battled through eight ties and eight different lead changes, but ultimately fell to East Carolina 61-53 inside Minges Coliseum on Wednesday.
Cincinnati is now 7-11 overall and 0-5 in the AAC.
Junior guard Jillian Hayes finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds, while senior forward Jadyn Scott turned in a season-high 12 points on 4-5 from the field and 4-4 from the line. Senior guard Caitlyn Wilson added 11 points behind a trio of threes from behind the arc.
Cincinnati used an 11-0 run over a four-minute span on baskets from five different Bearcats to take a 16-9 lead and force a timeout late in the opening period. The two teams each traded another make as the Bearcats extended their lead to 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.
After East Carolina responded with an 8-0 run out the quarter break, junior forward/center Malea Williams turned in four straight points with a pair of free throws off an offensive rebound and a jumper from the top of the key to secure a 22-21 lead at the media timeout.
Wilson connected on a pair of threes from behind the arc to extend the margin to 28-22 with 2:29 remaining before the half. The Bearcats outrebounded their hosts 20-10 in the first half to command a 28-24 lead.
The two sides continued to trade baskets out the half as back-to-back paint finishes from Scott made it 33-32 at the first media timeout of the second half.
Wilson connected on her third from distance to tie game at 35 at the 4:27 mark of the third. It marks her 10th game with multiple threes made this season. Hayes pulled down a second chance rebound and finished in traffic with five seconds remaining in the period to make it a one-possession contest at the end of the third quarter.
The two teams continued to trade makes before a 6-0 run by the Pirates midway through the fourth extended their lead to 56-47. The margin would not get any closer than seven on a layup from Wilson throughout the remainder of the contest.
The Bearcats finished 9-9 from the free throw line, their second game in which they converted on all their free throws this season. It marks the second most free throws made without a miss under head coach Michelle Clark-Heard.
Cincinnati finished with 33 points from its bench, its fourth game with 30 or more points from its bench.
Cincinnati returns home to host Houston next Wednesday, Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. ET.
