CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati women's basketball team fell 69-50 to Wichita State inside Fifth Third Arena on Saturday.
Cincinnati is now 7-13 overall, 0-7 in the AAC on the season.
Senior guard Mya Jackson returned from a one-game absence to turn in a team-high 12 points, while sophomore forward/center Clarissa Craig finished with 11 points on 4-4 from the field.
Craig got the Bearcats settled in early with three points and a pair of offensive rebounds through the opening minutes. Senior guard Sofia Gritzali connected on a deep two from the corner and redshirt sophomore forward Taziah Jenks converted on a free throw for a quick spark that trimmed the deficit to 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Jackson and Jenks buried back-to-back threes and Craig finished a slip screen layup on an 8-0 run that tied the contest early in the second period. The teams continued to trade baskets as Jackson connected on another pull-up jumper that cut the deficit to 25-20 with 1:18 remaining in the first half.
After Cincinnati cut it to one possession out the break at 27-25, the Shockers responded with a 17-6 run over the remainder of the quarter to command a double-digit lead. Houston continued to extend their lead throughout the remainder of the contest until the eventual final.
Cincinnati will hit the road for a two-game stretch starting with Tulsa inside Donald W. Reynolds Center on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
