DALLAS, Texas— Sophomore Will Claus (platform) and two men's relay teams earned silver medals on day three of the 2023 American Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday.
At the end of day three, the UC men are second in the team standings with 232 points and the women rank seventh with 115 points.
"It was great for us to all be in action tonight," head coach Mandy Commons-DiSalle said. Started the day off really strong with the women's 200-yard medley relay breaking the school record and Grace Gavin breaking the school record in the 50-yard backstroke as leadoff of the relay. I think we started off strong tonight and it was good to see what the field looked like as well."
In the final day of diving events, Claus earned the first podium finish for the Cincinnati diving squad in the platform dive event. The Cleveland, Ohio, native scored a season-best 334.25 in the preliminary round and followed up with 331.50 in the final round to take second overall. This is the second year in a row that the sophomore diver has placed second in the event at the meet.
On the swimming side, the women's 200-yard medley relay team of freshmen Grace Gavin, Joleigh Crye, sophomores Meghan Fleury, and Kaylee Nagel broke the school's 200-yard medley relay record with a time of 1:39.59. The women's team placed fourth overall in the event.
In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the team of junior Hunter Gubeno, fifth-year Conner Funke, junior Drew Hawthorne, and freshman Jet Fuhrmann grabbed a silver medal with a time of 1:26.74.
The men's third medal of the day came in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay as the team of senior Calvin Coetzee, Gubeno, junior Ricky Williams, and senior Michael Balcerak recorded a time of 6:25.01 for second place.
