GREENVILLE, N.C. -- East Carolina rallied from a 16-point deficit in the last 10 minutes to edge Cincinnati, 75-71, on Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum.
Cincinnati, up 37-29 at the half, opened on a 7-0 run in the second in which David DeJulius scored three and assisted on the other four.
An ECU put-back at 6:31 gave the Pirates their first single-digit deficit since 17:10, trailing 67-58. It became a 17-2 run heading into the final three minutes, with Cincinnati up 67-66, before Landers Nolley II calmly made a shallow jumper with the foul.
After four ECU free-throws and two by Nolley, the hosts took the lead again on a contested jumper with under a minute left. The Pirates drove for a layup with 16 seconds after a missed Bearcat trey to gain a 74-71 lead, and a final miss and rebound settled the outcome.
ECU scored its first four points from the free-throw line, all after the first media timeout, then made its first field goal at 13:50 to cut it to 10-6.
Despite the Bearcats mounting a 15-6 lead, ECU fought back on the boards to steal an 8-0 second-chance points margin and pull within 18-17, forcing a Cincinnati timeout at 9:09.
ECU took the lead for one possession, and UC responded with an 11-0 run. Jeremiah Davenport's three-pointer at 6:15 put him over the milestone mark, and he followed it with a four-point play on the ensuing possession for his 16th points. Nolley's driving dunk capped off the spurt, and the Pirates called a timeout down 31-21 at 5:06.
Nolley and Davenport (5-8 from deep) led UC with 19 points.
FROM WES MILLER
"It was a difficult night. We did not play well in the second half, and especially after good plays. We did not play the next play, and we were not focused. We didn't finish the game even when we had opportunities with the lead late in the game, so you're frustrated on every possible level. I'm disappointed."
