CINCINNATI – Freshman attacker Camryn Callaghan tied the single-game school record with eight goals, but the Cincinnati lacrosse team fell to Marquette, 19-13, on Sunday at Nippert Stadium.
Callaghan's school-record eighth goal brought Cincinnati within one point, 14-13, with 8:25 left in the match. However, Marquette responded by scoring five straight goals to end the UC threat.
The Bearcats fell to 3-1 on the season, while Marquette improved to 3-0.
Callaghan's eight goals tied the school record set by Monica Borzillo against Central Michigan on March 2, 2018.
"I'm happy and I love a kid like that who after the game said 'I'm sorry guys I should have had 11 (goals) to win us the game,'" head coach Gina Thomas said. "That's the mentality that we have to have. I'm so proud of her. I'm happy with the mentality she has about winning. She's setting a record, but she is more concerned with wins and losses."
Senior attacker Grace Wehland also tallied a hat trick with three goals to go along with a career-high three assists. Junior midfielder Ava Goeller and junior attacker Elizabeth Murphy each added a goal and two assists.
Marquette was led by senior attacker Shea Garcia, who had five goals.
The match went back-and-forth early, but Marquette took control with three straight goals after halftime to open up a 12-7 lead.
Callaghan's seventh goal came at 9:40 in the fourth quarter and brought the Bearcats with in 2, 14-12.
Callaghan's eighth goal brought UC within a goal, 14-13, but Marquette answered right back with a goal from Garcia to move back in front 15-13.
The Golden Eagles, who led 22-14 on draw controls, added four more goals down the stretch.
