Guidry Delivers, Bearcats Take Down Georgia State in Final Game

Redshirt junior infielder Kameron Guidry broke through a late-inning tie to lift the University of Cincinnati baseball team past Georgia State on Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

ATLANTA, Ga. – Redshirt junior infielder Kameron Guidry broke through a late-inning tie to lift the University of Cincinnati baseball team past Georgia State on Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
 
Guidry delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to left field in the top of the eighth inning to give UC the 6-4 victory in the final game of its opening-weekend series.
 
Senior Jackson Murphy (1-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Cincinnati. The right-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit, allowing no walks and striking out three.
 
The Bearcats were paced offensively by freshman two-way player Griffin Hugus, who went 2-for-4 on the day with his first career home run and two RBI.
 
With runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hugus made the short trip from third base to the mound to earn his first career save.   
 
Redshirt sophomore infielder Sean Springer, making his first career start, went 2-for-4 with an RBI while redshirt junior infielder Ryan Nicholson went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Freshman Landyn Vidourek also made his Bearcat debut in right field and went 1-for-3 with a walk.
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati fell behind in the first inning when Georgia State hit a two-run homerun.
 
After two scoreless innings, Hugus stepped up to the plate with two outs and belted a two-run homerun to tie the ballgame.
 
The Panthers quickly responded with a two-out homer in the bottom of the frame to reclaim the lead, 4-2. Redshirt junior right-handed pitcher Chase Hopewell went four innings and struck out four batters in his first career start for the Bearcats.
 
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tommy O'Connor came out of the bullpen and made an impact for the Bearcats, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing one hit, with three walks and two strikeouts.
 
In the top of the seventh, junior Josh Hegemann drew a leadoff walk, followed by Vidourek's first collegiate hit – a single through the right side to advance Hegemann to second. Springer delivered an RBI single to left field to score Hegemann. Vidourek then scored on a wild pitch to even the game once again, 4-4.  
 
The Bearcats broke through the late-inning tie in the top of the eighth inning. Nicholson and Hugus led off the frame with a pair of infield singles. After a passed ball put runners on second and third, Guidry delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to left field, giving UC the 6-4 advantage.
 
Murphy provided two shutout innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth while Hugus stepped up on the mound in the bottom of the ninth to close out the victory and earn the save.
