Cincinnati Travels to No. 7 Florida for Weekend Series

The Cincinnati baseball team will travel to No. 7-ranked Florida for a three-game series, with game one scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville, Fla.

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati baseball team will travel to No. 7-ranked Florida for a three-game series, with game one scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville, Fla.

Last time out, the Bearcats took two games of a four-game series at Georgia State. UC claimed game two, 9-4, and won the series finale, 6-4. The Panthers took the first game of the series, 12-2. Game three was ruled a double forfeit loss for both teams. 
 
On Sunday, senior reliever Jackson Murphy pitched two shutout innings while allowing one hit, no walks and striking out three to earn the win. Freshman two-way player Griffin Hugus worked the ninth to earn his first career save. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with his first career homerun – a two-run shot to right field. 
 
Redshirt junior Kameron Guidry delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field in the top of the eighth to break the late-inning tie. Redshirt sophomore infielder Sean Springer, making his first career start at second base, went 2-for-4 with an RBI. 
 
This past weekend, freshmen Hugus, Landyn Vidourek, Brenden Garula, CJ Dean, Chase Horst, and Kyle Schupmann made their collegiate debuts. Alec Jones, Lauden Brooks, Nick McClanahan, Kory Klingenbeck, Dylan Brosky and Mitch White each played their first game in a Cincinnati uniform.
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Ryan Nicholson has a .462 average through the first four games (6-for-13) with a homerun, two RBI and four runs scored in four starts. Jones is hitting .500 (2-for-4) with one RBI and two runs scored in two starts.  
 
On the mound, Alex Shea (1-0) and Murphy (1-1) each earned their first win of the season. Garrett Harker made his first career Friday start to begin the weekend series. He allowed only one run on five hits and struck out a career-high seven with three walks in five innings. He has a team-best 1.80 ERA.
 
Horst worked four innings in his Bearcat debut in game two of the series, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five batters with three walks.

The Bearcats and Gators last met Feb. 10-12, 2006 at the Condron Family Ballpark in Gainesville, Fla. Florida swept the three-game series.  
 
// RYAN RECOGNIZED
Nicholson earned a spot on the first edition of the AAC weekly honor roll, released on Monday, Feb. 20. It marked the first AAC weekly recognition of his career. 
 
The first baseman batted .462 (6-for-13) with a homerun, two RBI, four runs scored and two walks. He had two multi-hit games, a .769 slugging percentage and a .533 on-base percentage over four games. 

Nicholson went 3-for-3 with a homerun, two RBI, a walk and two runs scored in a 9-4 win at Georgia State on Saturday. He made his 100th career start in the contest. 

// SCOUTING NO. 7 FLORIDA
No. 7-ranked Florida (4-1) swept three games from Charleston Southern (Feb. 17-19), 13-3 (7), 16-2 (7), and 8-0, to open the season. The Gators took one of two midweek games from AAC foe South Florida (Feb. 21-22), with a 6-1 win in game one and a 10-9 loss in game two.
 
Florida ranks inside the top seven in the nation in every major poll, peaking at No. 2 at Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. The Gators are the NCBWA's No. 3 team and come in at No. 7 in the D1Baseball Top 25.
 
Through five games, Florida is batting .358 as a team and holds a 2.63 staff ERA, backed by a .977 fielding percentage.
 
Florida finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 42-24, including a mark of 15-15 against SEC opponents. The Gators went 23-13 at home and 14-9 on the road last season.
