CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati men's golf team has headed way down south for its first spring tournament: the Dorado Beach Collegiate in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
UC will send out Sam Jean, Ty Gingerich, William McDonald, Ryan Ford and Rylan Wotherspoon, as well as Wyatt Plattner as an individual. The 12-team field includes UNCG (host), No. 31 Duke, Rutgers, Ball State, Augusta, No. 2 Auburn, Army, No. 12 Virginia, Drexel, West Virginia, Old Dominion, Kennesaw State and Boston College.
This is UC's first trip outside of the U.S. mainland since going to Cabo San Lucas in October 2012. Cincinnati enters the weekend No. 34 in Golfweek and 39 in Golfstat after reaching school-record highs in the fall. The Bearcats as a team claimed championships at the Bearcat Invitational and Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. It is already the first season with multiple titles since 2007-08.
Sam Jean (No. 55 in Golfstat) commences his final semester with a team-best 69.00 stroke average from the fall, while Ty Gingerich (No. 70) is right behind at 69.14. The duo had nine and eight sub-70 rounds, respectively. Jean on Friday earned PGA Tour Canada qualification with membership and an exemption in Weston, Fla., following his seventh-place finish (5-under).
William McDonald (72.50) has been a key contributor since his transfer from Arkansas, including a season-low 5-under 211 to close out the fall. Rylan Wotherspoon (71.71) also soared as a freshman, lowering his score in each round of the last two tournaments, culminating in an 8-under, 14th -place finish at the Quail Valley Collegiate. Ford, the second rookie of the lineup, appeared in four tournaments, with a career-low 67 coming to close the Bearcat Invitational.
