MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Cincinnati turned a 15-point first-half deficit into a two-point game late, but Memphis made the plays it needed for a 76-73 defeat on Sunday afternoon in the FedExForum.
There was no separation until back-to-back Cincinnati turnovers led to fastbreak Tiger points, giving them a 16-11 lead and forcing a timeout at 11:56. Memphis ultimately made eight of nine field goals for a 31-16 lead at 7:20.
Memphis shot 51.4 percent and committed only two turnovers to lead 41-30 at the half. Cincinnati was 44.4 percent with 11 turnovers, a stark contrast from its 10.6 per game that ranked 22nd nationally.
Cincinnati pulled within 50-43 on an inside pass from David DeJulius to a sliding Viktor Lakhin for a floater. It came on the heels of back-to-back open Ody Oguama dunks. Back-to-back triples by Landers Nolley II and Jeremiah Davenport brought UC to within 63-55 at the 7:40 media stoppage. Oguama's fight through traffic for a bucket made it a six-point deficit, UC's shortest of the half.
Five-straight Tiger points brought it back to 68-57.
Nolley's open trey cut the deficit to 70-64 with 2:14 left, but an empty, second-chance opportunity at the foul line allowed Memphis to go up 72-64 with 1:09 remaining. Back-to-back DeJulius layups followed, and UC was down 72-68 with 29 seconds left. A blocked layup off the under-the-basket inbounds pass gave Memphis a one-and-one opportunity, that it missed, and Adams-Woods drove for a layup and 72-70 deficit and 6.8 to play.
Memphis made two foul shots for a four-point lead, and even Lakhin's banked three-pointer, his third-career make was not enough.
