SERIES HISTORY
The Buckeyes own a 9-1 all-time advantage, with UC's lone win coming in 2018 in Gettler Stadium, 17-12. It was also the last year in which the Bearcats started 4-1. UC flexed early with a 9-5 halftime lead.
Ohio State took an 18-9 victory last year in Nippert Stadium to spoil the Bearcats' home opener, rushing to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes. There was little separation, however, in any of the team categories. Kylie Nause led UC with a hat trick, while the other five goals were scored by 2023 returners.
LAST TIME OUT
Cincinnati posted a season-best 13 caused turnovers in its 14-11 win at Youngstown State last Wednesday, while Ashley Lapp collected a season-high 12 saves. Her previous-high was seven. The Akron transfer's 9.87 GAA is fourth in the AAC, and it was her first complete game of the season.
UC head coach Gina Thomas (formerly Oliver) was a three-time All-American at Ohio State, lettering from 2002-05. She also finished as the program's career leader in ground balls (236) and caused turnovers (201), while ranking second in draw controls (121). In May 2021, she was elected as vice president of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association (IWLCA), which includes a three-year service term.
FRESHMAN SENSATION
This will also be a homecoming for Upper Arlington product Camryn Callaghan, a two-time US Lacrosse All-American who has exploded on the scene. She scored three goals on four shots against the Penguins, her fifth hat trick to begin her career. She is second nationally with 31 points and third with 24 goals, the only freshman in the top-25 in the latter. Callaghan earned AAC Freshman of the Week honors twice to open the season and tied the school record of eight goals in the Marquette contest.
WEHLAND COMING UP
Senior Grace Wehland has become a key offensive threat for UC since the second half of last season. Her 10 goals (on 14 shots) and eight assists come on the heels of having 20 and seven last year. She played two games in 2020 before suffering a season-ending injury and played six times in limited duty in 2021 as part of an older, COVID-senior dominated team.
Last season, she earned her first AAC Attacker of the Week honor following a five-goal, five-shot performance in an April road win at Old Dominion. She accomplished the same in Week 2 of this season.
MLKVY MAKING THE MOST
Senior Dani Mlkvy has recorded 41 draw controls already, with the 8.2 per game leading the AAC (eighth nationally). She had a career-high 13 at Gardner-Webb and followed with 11 against Robert Morris. She is also eighth with 1.4 caused turnovers per game. Mlkvy had 81 last year, which ranked third at the school, and her 145 is currently fourth all-time. Her sister, Sam, holds the single-game, season and career records over what became a six-year career with injuries and COVID. The two overlapped for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
LINEUP CHANGE
Freshman Mia Federovich earned her first-career starting nod in the Youngstown State win, which also marked UC's first lineup change of the season. It made for two freshmen out of five first-year newcomers as starters. Kimora Bailey (Winthrop, and 2021 Big South Defensive Player of the Year) has been a major contributor, as well as Youngstown State transfer Lauren Ottensmeyer and the aforementioned Lapp and Callaghan.
