COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State controlled the opening draw in overtime and ultimately scored for a 13-12 victory over Cincinnati on Tuesday evening.
It was UC's first overtime contest since March 24, 2018 at Temple. UC was seeking its first win over the Buckeyes since a 17-12 decision in 2018.
Freshman Camryn Callaghan, who entered as the nation's third-leading goal scorer, tied it with 4:32 left on a short pass from Murphy, who was behind the net. It marked the Upper Arlington native's sixth-straight hat trick to begin her career. Her second brought UC within 10-8 at 3:37 in the third.
Ashley Lapp saved a free-position shot with 23 seconds left, and Grace Hirschmann caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball in the waning seconds to preserve regulation.
Lauren Ottensmeyer collected a first-half hat trick at 9:11 in the second quarter, scoring on a long-range, one-timer off Ava Goeller's assist. UC controlled the next draw, but after giving it back, Elizabeth Murphy caused a turnover.
Julie Rose, who scored four goals in 2021 as a freshman before missing 2022 with an injury, collected her first-career hat trick, the last tying it at 10-10 with 13:10 left. Ohio State called timeout, and the Buckeyes responded with the next two go-ahead goals. Grace Wehland had scored on the first possession of the fourth to bring UC within one.
Dani Mlkvy collected a career-high 14 draw controls, her third match out of six this year with double-digits. It was one away from matching her sister, Sam, for the school record set in 2021.
Twenty-six of UC's 33 shots were on goal as well.
Cincinnati hits the road for the third-straight contest Friday when it heads to Louisville at 4 p.m.
