DORADO, P.R. -- Cincinnati's spring opener could not have gone any better, finishing with a 44-under 820 and the Dorado Beach Collegiate title. The field included Golfstat's No. 2 Auburn, No. 12 Virginia and No. 31 Duke, with the Bearcats entering at No. 39.
It marks the third season in program history that the Bearcats have won three titles, with the last coming in 1997-98. The 1994-95 squad also won four events over a long 15-event season.
"Really excited for this group of young men," head coach Doug Martin said. "We executed our plan to near perfection. We played the par-5s 48-under this week. Everybody contributed this week to this victory. Huge congrats to Ryan Ford on his second-place finish. We will celebrate and enjoy this today and tomorrow and get back to work on Thursday."
Ryan Ford's 15-under 201 allowed him to finish second by two strokes. He was seeking to become the first Bearcat freshman champ since Emerson Newsome in April 2013. Ford's best prior finish of the season was 21st at the weather-shortened, season-opening Badger Invitational.
The Bearcats held a comfortable lead throughout the day, helped by a 269 on Monday that was one stroke shy of the best for the three-day field.
Sam Jean improved his score each round to tie for eighth, his fourth top-10 finish out of six events this season. Eleven of his 17 rounds have been in the 60s as well.
Ty Gingerich, William McDonald and Wyatt Plattner (individual) tied for 16th. Gingerich has been in the top-20 all six events this year, while it was McDonald's best at UC.
Cincinnati now turns its attention to the Colleton River Collegiate (March 6-7), an event in which it finished second last year.
