CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati men's and women's swimming and diving program had six student-athletes named to the College Sport Communicators Academic All-District Team on Tuesday.
Senior Spencer Sehlhorst, graduate student Murat Sagdullaev, junior Hunter Gubeno and fifth-year senior Conner Funke were selected on for the men and sophomore Maddy Hensler and junior Jessica Davis earned the recognition for the women for their academic and athletic contributions.
To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50, be a sophomore academically, have a year-in-residence at their current school and have appeared in at least 50 percent of the team's contests. Academic All-America voting will continue now until Tuesday, March 7.
Sehlhorst has maintained at 4.0 GPA average all four years and is majoring in psychology. Shelhorst earned a bronze medal in the 400-yard individual medley at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Championships and will graduate this spring as program record holder in the event with a time of 3:47.10.
AAC Most Outstanding Male Swimmer of the Year Gubeno possesses a 3.74 GPA and plans to major in marketing. During the season, he earned AAC Men's Swimmer of the Week honors three times and claimed two conference titles in the 100-yard at 47.64 seconds and 200-yard backstroke at 1:41.80.
Funke has held a 3.88 GPA since transferring to Cincinnati in 2021 and will graduate this year with a degree in medical sciences. Funke was the second leg of the men's bronze medal and program record 200-yard medley relay team that clocked a time of 1:26.74 and also placed fourth overall in the 200-yard breaststroke at the AAC Championships.
Graduate student Sagdullaev boasts an undergraduate GPA of 3.975 and a graduate average of 4.0. He competed in four meets this season and was the program's Legion of Excellence honoree for his performance in the classroom.
Davis possesses 3.84 GPA and plans to major in communications. She advanced to the finals in all three events at the AAC Championships with a best individual finish of fourth with a time of 22.93 seconds coming the 50-yard.
Hensler holds a 3.69 GPA and plans to major in psychology. Hensler recorded personal bests in all three events she participated in at the AAC Championships.
