MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Cincinnati lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals en route to a 9-4 victory over Central Michigan at CMU Lacrosse Stadium on Friday.
The Bearcats improved their record to 6-2 for the best start through eight matches in school history, and the four goals allowed were the fewest since a 21-3 win over Butler on April 1, 2017.
UC held the host Chippewas scoreless over the final three quarters as junior Ashley Lapp was stellar in the cage with seven saves.
"It was a great defensive day," head coach Gina Thomas said. "Our draw unit and defense won it today. I'm looking forward to our offense playing with more confidence, but it was a great way to win together."
Central Michigan's Sadie Hinkle scored first to begin the game as the Chippewas jumped out to a 3-0 lead before UC senior midfielder Morgan Bates got the Bearcats on the scoreboard at 3:58 in the first quarter.
After CMU went ahead, 4-1, Cincinnati got second-quarter goals from sophomore Kylie Gioia, senior Grace Wehland and freshman Camryn Callaghan to tie the match at 4-4 at halftime and never look back. Callaghan extended her season-long hat trick streak to eight, giving her 34 goals on the season.
Junior midfielder Ava Goeller started the scoring for the Bearcats in the second half, followed by two goals from Callaghan and scores from Wehland and junior Lauren Ottensmeyer in the fourth quarter.
UC dominated the circle with a 14-2 draw record through the game. Callaghan recorded another hat trick, her eighth consecutive three-goal match.
