Cincinnati Edged in Middle Game at Wofford

The University of Cincinnati baseball team was edged in the middle game of its series against Wofford on Saturday at Russell C. King Field.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  The University of Cincinnati baseball team was edged in the middle game of its series against Wofford on Saturday at Russell C. King Field. 
 
Wofford scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to break the late-inning tie and earn the win, 5-2.

Due to expected inclement weather, UC and Wofford will now play the final game of their series at 4 p.m. on Sunday. 
 
The Bearcats' two runs came via the long ball. Redshirt junior Ryan Nicholson led the Bearcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, home run and RBI. He belted his fourth home run of the season in the first inning. 
 
Sophomore outfielder Kerrington Cross hit his second home run in the last three games with a solo shot to right center in the sixth.
 
Freshman pitcher Chase Horst provided a solid start where he worked 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three batters with two walks. Sophomore Garrett Harker (0-2) came out of the bullpen and took the loss for the Bearcats.
 
The Bearcats moved to 7-8 with the loss while the Terriers improved to 14-1. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Nicholson put Cincinnati on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-out solo home run off Wofford freshman Charlie Weber. The Terriers quickly got the run back in the bottom half of the frame. 
 
Cincinnati reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth off a solo shot to right field by Cross. Wofford once again had an answer in the bottom half of the frame to even the score at two apiece. 
 
The Bearcats had a baserunner in each of the next three innings but were unable to plate another run. Wofford broke the late-inning tie with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth for the eventual 5-2 final score.
