Cincinnati Falls to Wofford in Series Opener

The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Wofford, 12-3, on Friday at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Wofford, 12-3, on Friday at Russell C. King Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
 
The Bearcats moved to 7-7 with the loss, while Wofford won its 13th straight game in improving to 13-1. 
 
In his season debut, junior infielder Max Palmieri went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. 
 
Junior pitcher Max Bergmann came out of the bullpen and gave up two runs on four hits. He struck out a season-high six batters in four innings of work.
 
The Bearcats and Terriers will play the middle game of the series on Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Cincinnati fell behind Wofford in the first inning when the Terriers plated eight runs on six hits. The Terriers added a pair of runs to lead 10-0 heading into the fourth inning. 
 
In the top of the fourth, Cole Harting singled to right field and advanced to third on a balk and wild pitch. Palmieri stepped into the batter's box with two outs and smashed a two-run home run to left field to drive in Cincinnati's first runs of the game.
 
Bergmann came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the fourth and went three shutout innings before giving up a two-run homer in the seventh. 
 
The Bearcats added a run in the top of the seventh. Palmieri notched a lead-off single and later raced home on a failed pickoff attempt at third base. 
 
Senior Jackson Murphy pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning with a pair of ground outs and a strikeout. Wofford closed out the contest in the ninth to claim the series opener by a final score of 12-3.
