ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Sam Jean and Rylan Wotherspoon are tied for 15th to lead the Cincinnati men's golf team after its first day and two rounds at the Sea Island Collegiate.
Cincinnati was tied for the lead after the first 18 with a 2-under 280. Six of the 13 teams in the field are in the top-50 as well.
Wotherspoon's 1-under 69 to start was two off a career-low. It was his fourth round in the 60s out of the last four events. His best finish of the year was 14th at the Quail Valley Intercollegiate to close the fall. Jean is seeking to continue his streak to eight tournaments finishing under par, helped by his 69 in Monday's opener. Ty Gingerich remains in the hunt at 24th with two consistent rounds.
"We really needed today as a team," head coach Doug Martin said. "The golf course played extremely difficult, which is something we haven't seen to this point in two events this spring. I thought the morning round was one of our better rebounds this year. You were required to have every aspect of your game working. In the afternoon, it was a little easier, but still the margin for error was extremely small. Tomorrow is going to be a shootout with a lot of great teams with a chance to win."
Cincinnati has twice produced its lowest round in its final one, and both were part of school-record tourney showings.
