ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- Three Bearcats tied for 13th to lead the No. 30 Cincinnati men's golf team to a tie for second at the Sea Island Intercollegiate.

"What a performance by this group today in brutal conditions for the first two hours of play," head coach Doug Martin said. "As I said yesterday, we really needed a tough test of golf this week and we received it. The toughness this group showed after a poor start today was extremely impressive. I'm really happy for this team and the progress we continue to make each week.

The freshman Wotherspoon's 13th-place showing was a career-best, besting his No. 14 spot in the fall finale. The 212 was also one stroke off his career-low. In doing so, he became the fifth different Bearcat to be the team leader at the event.

Ty Gingerich and Sam Jean were the other ones to match Wotherspoon. Gingerich, who had an eagle on No. 15, had the team's best round of the day at 69, something that Jean, Wotherspoon and Ryan Ford all accomplished at varying points of the week as well. Ford finished 29th, while William McDonald rounded it out at 50th.

UC's 282 in the final round was four strokes better than its second, allowing it to climb from fourth to second-place.

No. 25 Kansas State took the title by seven strokes. The Bearcats tied No. 37 Ohio State and finished ahead of three other top-50 teams.

Cincinnati will take a rare lengthy hiatus before returning to action on Monday, April 3, for Mississippi State's Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, Miss.
