ROCK HILL, S.C. – Strong pitching powered the University of Cincinnati baseball team past Winthrop, 3-1, on Tuesday evening at Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, S.C.
Redshirt junior starter Chase Hopewell and three relievers combined for a four-hitter in the victory.
Hopewell went three shutout innings and allowed one single against 11 batters faced.
Redshirt junior Alex Shea (2-0) surrendered just one unearned run and one hit while striking out four batters over 3.2 innings to pick up his second win of the season.
Senior Mitch White pitched the final two innings and struck out a pair to earn his second save of the season.
Redshirt junior infielder Max Palmieri went 3-for-4 with a run scored and career-high two stolen bases. Sophomore outfielder Kerrington Cross and redshirt junior first baseman Ryan Nicholson each drove in a run in the victory.

The Bearcats got on the board in the first frame of action. Freshman Landyn Vidourek drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on a single from Palmieri, stole third and raced home on a wild pitch.
The game then settled into a pitcher's duel with Hopewell and Shea holding the Eagles to just two hits in 6.2 innings of combined work.
In the top of the sixth, Palmieri notched a leadoff single to center field and stole second. With two outs, Cross drove in the Bearcats' second run of the game with a single to center field.
Winthrop capitalized on an error and wild pitch to cut the Bearcats' lead in half in the bottom of the seventh. Pitcher Nick McClanahan inherited a pair of runners with two outs and got of the jam with a fly out.
The Bearcats quickly added a run back on a double in the top of the eighth. Palmieri recorded his third hit of the day with a one-out single to first base. Nicholson then doubled to left center to drive in pinch runner Kameron Guidry.
After giving up a pair of singles to start the bottom of the eighth, White retired his next five batters faced to close out the victory and earn the save.
