Cincinnati Drops Midweek Matchup to Winthrop

In the second meeting between the two teams, the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Winthrop, 13-3, on Wednesday night at Winthrop Ballpark.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In the second meeting between the two teams, the University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Winthrop, 13-3, on Wednesday night at Winthrop Ballpark.
 
The Bearcats moved to 8-9 with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 9-9. 
 
Freshman outfielder Landyn Vidourek went 2-for-5 with his first career home run on a solo shot to right field in the first inning. 
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Ryan Nicholson finished 2-for-3 while redshirt junior catcher Alec Jones belted his second home run of the season.
 
Freshman starter Tommy Boba allowed three runs on six hits while striking out a career-high six batters over 5.2 innings. Redshirt junior Zach Segal (2-1) took the loss for the Bearcats. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Lead-off batter Vidourek belted his first career home run, a solo shot to right field to put the Bearcats on the board in the first inning. 
 
Winthrop got the run back on an RBI single in the bottom of the second. Boba then retired his next seven batters faced to keep the score even through four innings. 
 
Jones smashed a two-out solo home run to left field to put UC back in front, 2-1, in the top of the fifth inning. 
 
The Bearcats padded the lead in the sixth on a double from Kory Klingenbeck. Kerrington Cross led off the inning with a single to third base and advanced to second on a ground out. Klingenbeck then delivered an RBI double to right center. 
 
The Eagles tied up the game in the home half of the sixth with two runs on three hits and one error. 
 
Vidourek and Nicholson each singled to put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the threat for the Bearcats. 
 
Winthrop took the lead in the bottom of the seventh, plating four runs on two hits and three walks. The Eagles would go on to score 10 unanswered runs over two innings.  
 
// UP NEXT
Due to expected inclement weather in Spartanburg, S.C., the University of Cincinnati baseball team has adjusted its weekend schedule. The Bearcats will now play USC Upstate at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Harley Park.
 
Cincinnati will also play a pair of neutral site games against Princeton at 11 a.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday. Live stats for all three games will be available here.
 
The Bearcats will finish up a nine-game road stretch this weekend. Cincinnati will then play eight of its next nine games at home, beginning with a newly added midweek tilt against Marshall on Tuesday, March 21 at UC Baseball Stadium.
