Cincinnati Falls to Miami (OH) in Slugfest

The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to in-state rival Miami (OH), 15-12, in a slugfest on Wednesday night at UC Baseball Stadium.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to in-state rival Miami (OH), 15-12, in a slugfest on Wednesday night at UC Baseball Stadium.
 
After a two-hour weather delay, the RedHawks overcame a two-run deficit in the seventh inning to earn the win.  
 
Junior outfielder Cole Harting went 2-for-6 with a home run and three RBI. Freshman utility player Griffin Hugus finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and two walks while sophomore Lauden Brooks went 2-for-2 with one RBI, two runs scored and two walks.  
 
The Bearcats' home opener had a final attendance of 2,513 fans for the second largest crowd in UC Baseball Stadium history.
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Miami (OH) struck first with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. 
 
The Bearcats responded with three runs on two hits and one error in the bottom of the frame. Landyn Vidourek drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Harting then stepped up to the plate and launched an opposite field home run that hit off Fifth Third Arena. JP Sponseller followed with a walk and came around to score thanks to an RBI single by Josh Hegemann. 
 
Cincinnati continued to pour on with six runs in the bottom of the second. Cam Scheler, Brooks and Vidourek drew three straight walks to start the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Sponseller drew an RBI walk, followed by a hit-by-pitch on Guidry. Hugus then delivered a bases-clearing double to left center. Hegemann followed with an RBI single to left field as the Bearcats led 9-3 after two innings.
 
Miami (OH) quickly added three runs back with a three-run shot to left field in the top of the third, 9-6.
 
Brooks notched a lead-off single in the bottom of the frame. Harting came up big with an RBI double to plate another run for the Bearcats, 10-6. 
 
The RedHawks scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, freshman Brenden Garula got out of the jam with a ground out. 
 
Sponseller hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. He launched a lead-off homer down the right field line. 
 
Junior Zach Segal came out of the bullpen in the top of the fifth and provided a clean inning with a pair of strikeouts. He tossed two innings and allowed only one run on one hit. 
 
The Bearcats added another run in the bottom of the sixth. A pair of hit-by-pitches and a walk loaded the bases for Brooks who drew an RBI walk to make it 12-10. 
 
After a two-hour weather delay, Miami (OH) reclaimed the lead with three runs on three hits in the seventh. The RedHawks added two runs in the ninth for the 15-12 final score.
