Cincinnati Hosts Marshall Tuesday, Travels to Xavier Wednesday

The University of Cincinnati baseball team continues a busy stretch with a pair of midweek, non-conference games.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team continues a busy stretch with a pair of midweek, non-conference games. 
 
The Bearcats host Marshall on Tuesday, with the first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. at UC Baseball Stadium. UC will travel to take on crosstown rival Xavier on Wednesday, with the first pitch slated for 3 p.m. at Hayden Field. 
 
Tuesday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN+. Wednesday's game will be streamed on FloSports ($). 
 
Cincinnati (8-12) finished up an eight-game, 11-day road trip last weekend, picking up wins against Eastern Kentucky, 10-5, on March 8 and Winthrop, 3-1, on March 14. 
 
The Bearcats will play eight of their next nine games at home. The home stretch includes midweek games against Marshall (March 21) and No. 6 Louisville (March 28) and weekend series against Butler (March 24-26) and Wichita State (March 31-April 2). 
 
Redshirt junior first baseman Ryan Nicholson has a .343 average (23-for-67) with four home runs, nine RBI and 11 runs scored in 18 starts. He leads the club in hits (23), home runs (4), doubles (7), triples (1) and walks (10). He went 3-for-4 against Princeton on Friday with a career-high two doubles that each drove in a run. 
 
Sophomore Kerrington Cross is batting .234 (15-for-64) in 17 starts and is first on the team in RBI (11) and second in hits (15), home runs (3) and runs scored (11). 
 
Since his return to the diamond on March 10 at Wofford, redshirt junior infielder Max Palmieri is batting .625 (5-for-8) in three games played with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored.
 
Cincinnati has a team batting average of .221 through 20 games. 
 
On the mound, redshirt junior Chase Hopewell boasted a 1.00 ERA in two starts last week. He surrendered just one run on four hits and struck out a season-high six batters over six innings against Princeton on Saturday. He leads the staff in innings pitched (22.1) and strikeouts (18). 
 
Cincinnati and Marshall have met 42 times in program history with the Bearcats leading 26-16 in the all-time series. The two teams last met on March 5, 2008 in Cincinnati, resulting in a 10-5 victory for the Bearcats.

UC has an all-time record of 99-62-1 against Xavier. The 99 victories are the most against any opponent in program history. The Bearcats have 99 wins against Xavier, 87 victories against Dayton and 86 against Louisville.
 
The Bearcats have dropped four straight to the Musketeers. UC's last victory came in a 7-2 home win on March 22, 2021. 

// SCOUTING MARSHALL
Marshall (9-8) dropped two of three from Appalachian State this past weekend in Charleston, W.Va. The Herd fell 12-4 in game one and 9-8 in the middle game before picking up a 7-5 win in the series finale. 
 
Through 17 games, Marshall is batting .266 as a team and holds a 5.13 staff ERA, backed by a .969 fielding percentage. 
 
Fifth year Luke Edwards is batting .352 (25-for-71) in 17 starts and leads the team in hits (25), doubles (7), stolen bases (7-for-7) and runs scored (19). Fifth year Daniel Carinci has a .309 average (17-for-55) in 15 starts.
 
// SCOUTING XAVIER
Xavier swept a three-game series from Wofford last weekend to improve to 10-9. The Musketeers are 0-1 at home and 10-8 on the road this year.
 
Xavier is batting .272 as a team and holds a 4.41 staff ERA, backed by a .973 field percentage. 
 
Graduate student Andrew Walker has a .337 average (28-for-83) in 19 starts and leads the club in RBI (16), stolen bases (9-for-9) and doubles (6). Junior Matthew DePrey leads the team in home runs (8) and runs scored (16) and is second in hits (23).
