Late Inning Rally Falls Short Against Wichita State

The University of Cincinnati baseball team rallied late, but ultimately fell to Wichita State, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon inside UC Baseball Stadium.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team rallied late, but ultimately fell to Wichita State, 10-6, on Saturday afternoon inside UC Baseball Stadium. 
 
The Bearcats (11-17, 0-2 AAC) had the go-ahead run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth before falling in the middle game of their series against the Shockers. The series finale will be played at noon on Sunday.  
 
Sophomore Kerrington Cross went 3-for-5 with two doubles and one run scored. Redshirt junior Cam Scheler finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Sophomore Lauden Brooks added two RBI and one run scored in the loss. 
 
Freshman starter Chase Horst (1-3) took the loss in 2.2 innings of work. 
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED 
The Bearcats threatened in the bottom of the first. Landyn Vidourek notched a lead-off infield single, and Cross doubled to left field to put runners in scoring position. Cole Harting drew a one-walk to load the bases, but the Bearcats would strand the runners. 
 
Wichita State took an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. 
 
In the home half of the sixth, Cross led off with his second double of the day while Ryan Nicholson followed with a single and advanced to second on a throw home. After Harting drew a walk to load the bases, Kameron Guidry drove in the Bearcats' first run of the game with an RBI single to left field. Brooks provided a sacrifice fly to plate the second run of the inning. 
 
The Bearcats scored four runs to pull within two in the bottom of the eighth. Brooks and Griffin Hugus drew back-to-back, bases-loaded walks to plate two runs. Scheler then came through with an RBI single to left field. UC added another run on an RBI ground out and had the go-ahead run at the plate before lining out to end the inning.  
 
Wichita State plated two runs in the top of the ninth for the eventual 10-6 final score.
