FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- The No. 36 Cincinnati men's golf team saw a five-stroke improvement in its second day of the Mason Rudolph Championship, tying for ninth heading into the final day.

"We have been off collectively as a group this week," head coach Doug Martin said. "William played solid today in his last 15 holes, but we have not played with much crispness this week. We have made some very uncharacteristic mistakes. We have one more round tomorrow to build on going into the conference championship."

William McDonald posted his lowest round in three tournaments with a 2-under 69 to jump into 21st despite two bogeys in the first three holes, finishing with back-to-back birdies. As it stands, it would be his third-best finish of the season (highest was 13th at the Colleton River Collegiate in March). Four out of five golfers in all improved from their Monday performance. Ty Gingerich's even-par 71 has him second on the squad at No. 30.

The Bearcats are one stroke behind Middle Tennessee and seven behind seventh-place Liberty. They have had two tournaments this year in which they saved their best round for last, with both concluding the fall.
