CINCINNATI – Cincinnati football head coach Scott Satterfield expects the Bearcats to run more than 100 plays on Saturday during the 2023 Spring Game presented by Skyline Chili.
Following the 13th practice of the spring on Tuesday, Satterfield said the annual spring scrimmage will not be a "real game," but more of a scrimmage with several situational team periods and other drills.
"It's going to look like football though, we're going to put the ball down, we're going to move it," Satterfield said. "First and ten and let's play ball. We'll do a lot of that. Then toward the end of it we'll start working it down in the red zone, we'll work plus 30, inside the 18 and inside the nine, and try to create some scenarios that way. We'll do a few special teams things within the scrimmage as well. We'll see how many plays we end up running, but I anticipate over 100-125 snaps, something like that. So, we'll get a lot of good work in…The coaches will be off to the side. We're going to let the guys go out and play to kind of see where we're at."
Satterfield said the defense, led by All-American Dontay Corleone and all-conference seniors Deshawn Pace and Jowon Briggs, remains stout following the latest two-hour practice session.
However, the offense is closing the gap.
The running back room has started to turn heads as the offensive line continues to gel.
The Bearcats have a handful of early enrollees taking advantage of spring practice, including quarterback Brady Drogosh and wide receiver Barry Jackson.
Jackson, in particular, flashed earlier this week for a wide receiver room that returns only one scholarship receiver from last year's team in Chris Scott.
"Barry Jackson, I thought had a really nice day today. He's had a ton of reps in the slot for a guy who's just got here in January, he's learned a lot," Satterfield said. "He's one that has kind of stood out. I think he deserves some recognition."
Jackson is a 5-11, 175-pounder from Cedar Grove High School in Ellenwood, Ga. He will be a true freshman this fall.
Passing to Jackson, Scott and standout transfers Dee Wiggins (Louisville/Miami) and Donovan Ollie (Washington State) on Saturday will be sixth-year quarterbacks Ben Bryant and Emory Jones as well as redshirt sophomore Brady Lichtenberg and Drogosh. Redshirt junior Evan Prater is out due to injury.
Letterman's Weekend Returns The Bearcats will host the annual letterman's weekend on Friday and Saturday, as well, featuring a golf event with alumni and the annual Captain's Breakfast before the Spring Game.
Alec Pierce is among the former players expected to attend. The Captain's Breakfast was started by Sid Gillman in the 1950's and has been a mainstay event for Bearcats ever since.
"I'm looking forward to it," Satterfield said. "I've been able to meet a lot that have come by the building or practice. That will be special to be able to go out Friday for the golf outing. All former players I'm going to be able to hang out with them. That's going to be awesome. A bunch of them are going to stay Saturday, so we'll get to hang out with them some more. You mention the captain's breakfast, what a great tradition that is. To be able to hear from some of those guys. Captains from a lot of eras throughout their tenures here in Cincinnati football. We're excited about that. It's going to be a fun weekend."
