Bearcats Blanked in Middle Game at No. 9 ECU

The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped the middle game of its series to No. 9-ranked ECU, 10-0 (7), on Saturday afternoon inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Cincinnati baseball team dropped the middle game of its series to No. 9-ranked ECU, 10-0 (7), on Saturday afternoon inside Clark-LeClair Stadium. 

Junior outfielder Cole Harting recorded his 150th career hit with a single to left center in the fourth inning. He finished 1-for-3 with a stolen base. He is 8-of-9 in stolen base attempts this season. 

Redshirt junior starter Chase Hopewell (1-4) took the loss on the mound for the Bearcats. He allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings. Freshman Chase Horst surrendered three runs on five hits in 2.1 innings in relief. 

For the Pirates, starter Carter Spivey tossed 7.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts for the complete-game win. The Pirates scored 10 runs on 14 hits and belted three home runs in the contest. They scored in six of the seven innings. 

The Bearcats were held to four hits and had just four total base runners in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
ECU struck first with an RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the first. The Pirates extended their advantage with a two-run shot in the home half of the second. 

The Bearcats recorded two-out hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Lauden Brooks laid down a successful bunt in the third, Harting singled in the fourth and Griffin Hugus doubled to left center in the fifth. 

ECU padded its lead with an RBI double in the fourth and a three-run homer in the fifth. Ryan Nicholson notched a lead-off single down the left field line in the top of the sixth, but the Pirates induced three straight outs to end the frame. ECU scored three runs over the final two innings for the 10-0 final score.
