Bearcats’ Comeback Falls Short Against Indiana

The University of Cincinnati baseball team rallied from a seven-run deficit but fell short to Indiana, 11-9, on Wednesday night inside UC Baseball Stadium.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team rallied from a seven-run deficit but fell short to Indiana, 11-9, on Wednesday night inside UC Baseball Stadium. 
 
The Bearcats scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the go-ahead run at the plate before the Hoosiers held on for the win.  
 
Sophomore outfielder Kerrington Cross finished 3-for-5 with a career-high five RBI to go along with a career-high two doubles and one run scored. 
 
Sophomore infielder Lauden Brooks was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while freshman two-way player Griffin Hugus went 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored. 
 
The Bearcats used five pitchers in the game. Graduate student Dylan Brosky provided a solid showing out of the bullpen. He tossed two shutout innings in relief, allowing no hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Tommy O'Connor (0-1) started and took the loss for the Bearcats. 
 
Cincinnati scored nine runs on 11 hits and left seven runners on base while the Hoosiers scored 11 runs on 12 hits and stranded nine baserunners.
 
// HOW IT HAPPENED 
Indiana, aided by a five-spot in the second inning, jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings. Junior Max Bergmann tossed back-to-back scoreless frames to bring the Bearcats to the plate in the fifth.
 
Kameron Guidry and Kory Klingenbeck each drew a walk to start the inning. Brooks stepped into the batter's box and delivered a one-out single through the left side to score Guidry. Cole Harting followed with the third walk of the inning to load the bases for Cross who cleared them with a double to right center to make it 7-4.
 
Indiana padded its lead with four runs on four hits, including a three-run shot, in the seventh inning.
 
The Bearcats trailed 11-4 with one final chance in the bottom of the ninth. Hugus drilled a single to second base to lead off the inning. Brooks recorded a one-out base hit through the left side to put runners on first and third. CJ Dean drove in a run with an RBI single to right center. Harting drew his second walk to load the bases once again for Cross. 
 
Cross belted the first pitch he saw to left center to drive in two runs. Sean Springer then drew a two-out walk to load the bases for Guidry who provided a two-run single to left center. The Hoosiers induced a fly out to end the comeback attempt for the Bearcats.
