CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell to Tulane, 10-3, on Saturday afternoon inside UC Baseball Stadium.
The Bearcats owned an early 3-0 lead before the Green Wave scored 10 unanswered runs to even the series.
Redshirt junior catcher Alec Jones led the Bearcats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles that each drove in a run. Sophomore Kerrington Cross went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a walk. Redshirt junior Ryan Nicholson, playing in his 150th career game, recorded his 150th career hit – an RBI single.
Starter Chase Hopewell allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six batters with two walks in four innings. Alex Shea (2-2) came out the bullpen and took the loss for the Bearcats.
Cincinnati scored three runs on five hits and left five runners on base while the Green Wave scored 10 runs on 10 hits and stranded 14 baserunners. The Bearcats were held hitless for the final six innings.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
Hopewell retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the top of the first. Cross led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right center. Jones drove in the first run of the game with an RBI double down the left field line to plate Cross.
In the bottom of the third, Cross notched a one-out infield single to bring up Jones who delivered his second RBI double of the day. Nicholson followed with his 150th career hit, a two-out, RBI single through the right side, to make it 3-0.
Tulane pulled within one with two runs on three hits in the top of the fifth. Graduate student pitcher Dylan Brosky went two shutout innings in relief to keep the score at 3-2 through six innings.
The Green Wave rallied late with five runs on three hits in the top of the seventh. They added three runs in the ninth for the eventual 10-3 final score.
