BELLEAIR, Fla. -- Cincinnati's 5-under 275 in Sunday's final round allowed the No. 40 Bearcats to surge from sixth to a second-place finish at the AAC Championships.
UC, which was 3-over 843 for the weekend, matched the 2017 squad for its highest standing in its AAC era. It entered Sunday in sixth-place and was eight strokes back of then-second-place SMU before staging its impressive rally. This was Cincinnati's fourth tournament out of 11 this year in which it saved its best round for last.
The Bearcats will learn their NCAA Regional destination on Wednesday, May 3.
"We played extremely well today on a very demanding golf course," head coach Doug Martin said. "Unfortunately, we waited to play well until the last round. We were just not good the first two days and have nobody to blame but ourselves. We now have roughly three weeks to get prepared for regionals. We will be ready to play come mid-May."
William McDonald's 4-under 66 was both a career-low and the best round by a Bearcat at the event, while his 10th-place finish was the best of his career as well. He had a pair of 73s Friday and Saturday and had just two bogeys Sunday.
Ryan Ford surged ahead with a 3-under 67 to tie for third. The Bearcats, in their AAC history, have had three individuals finish second, the last being Sam Jean in 2021.
Freshman Rylan Wotherspoon (3-over 213) tied for 13th to both match his career-best and third top-20 finish. Jean followed in 15th while Ty Gingerich was 33rd.
Houston, which joins Cincinnati and UCF in the Big 12 next year, claimed the team and individual (Santiago De La Fuente at 10-under 200) titles.
