GREENVILLE, N.C. -- The Cincinnati lacrosse team fought to within 8-7 late in the third quarter, but East Carolina scored seven-straight goals for an eventual 18-8 win through a driving rainstorm on Saturday afternoon.

The Bearcats (9-5, 2-2 AAC) were down 5-1 after the opening period. Neither team scored in the second until 4:32 when Camryn Callaghan picked up a deflected pass and rifled it home.

Cincinnati's play of the day came at 4:20 in the second quarter. Grace Jenny corralled the draw up high, then raced straight for the cage and unleashed her third goal of the season, a mere 12 seconds after Callaghan scored. It brought UC to within 5-3.

Callaghan scored again at 2:07 and with 14 seconds left for her 11th hat trick of the season and 49th goal, and UC entered the break down 8-5.

It was more of the same in a swampy third quarter. Lauren Ottensmeyer's goal at 10:10 (off an Ashley Lapp save on the other side) was the only board action until freshman Mia Federovich snagged a high Ava Goeller pass and punched in her third of the season. That 8-7 deficit at 2:44 was the closest the visiting Bearcats would get, however.

The teams were even on shots (28), while UC had just one more turnover, but ECU went 5-for-10 on free-position opportunities compared to the Bearcats' 1-of-4. Kylie Gioia had two assists for the second-straight game, giving her eight points over that span.

Dani Mlkvy's two draw controls gives her 93 on the year, inching closer to Sam Mlkvy's school record of 97. Callaghan surpassed two Laura Simanski seasons for sole possession of third in single-season goals. Monica Borzillo is second with 61 in 2019.

Cincinnati returns to action Wednesday at Louisville (4 p.m.), a makeup of the March 3 postponement.
