CINCINNATI -- The No. 40 Cincinnati men's golf team's banner season got even better Tuesday. Doug Martin earned AAC Coach of the Year honors, and Ryan Ford took home Freshman of the Year, joining teammates Sam Jean and Ty Gingerich on the All-Conference team. The trio mark the program's most conference honorees since 1993.
The squad will also learn its NCAA Regional destination Wednesday at 1 p.m., live on the Golf Channel and replayed on NCAA.com. More information about the championships are available here.
Martin is in his 14th season as the Bearcats' head coach and 17th overall. UC reached No. 25 in the national polls, its highest ever, while winning three tournaments for the first time since 1997-98. The squad also collected its lowest round (19-under 269) and tournament score (44-under 820) this spring, among its many highlights.
Ford (Westfield, Ind.) is UC's first Freshman of the Year in its AAC tenure, as well as its first superlative recipient since Austin Squires was the 2017 Player of the Year. Ford's 72.00 stroke average includes a 70.33 spring total, down from 75.18 in the fall. He started the semester with a school-record, 15-under 201 in Puerto Rico's Dorado Beach Collegiate. He opened the Mossy Oak Collegiate in Mississippi by matching a program-record 8-under 64, ultimately finishing one stroke off the title and ahead of 15 top-100 golfers. Ford was also third at the AAC Championships with a 4-under 206.
Jean (Greenwood, Ind.) is enjoying a three-peat on the All-AAC team, this time leading UC with a 69.97 stroke average and ranking 98th in Golfstat. He won the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream in September and was 48-under over the first seven tournaments. The fifth-year senior boasts a 72.35 stroke average, and last May he became Cincinnati's seventh NCAA individual participant when he took part in Columbus.
Gingerich (Russiaville, Ind.) joins Jean as a unanimous selection and is making his first appearance on the postseason honor roll. He was the AAC Golfer of the Month in October for a pair of top-10 finishes and carding an overall 24-under par. His 70.91 stroke average is second to Jean, and he has improved that score each season since first teeing off in 2020-21.
