Bearcats Place Four on CSC Academic All-District® Team

The University of Cincinnati baseball team placed four student-athletes on the Academic All-District® Team, announced by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati baseball team placed four student-athletes on the Academic All-District® Team, announced by the College Sports Communicators on Tuesday. 
 
Zach Segal, Alex Shea, Josh Hegemann and Garrett Harker captured All-District accolades for the first time in their careers. 
 
The 2023 Academic All-District® Baseball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. 
 
Segal, a redshirt junior from Loveland, Ohio, holds a 3.95 GPA and graduated with a degree in marketing this spring. He is a three-time AAC All-Academic selection and was inducted into UC's Legion of Excellence in 2022. Segal has a 3-1 record in 20 appearances out of the bullpen in 2023 with 24 strikeouts in 26.2 innings pitched. 
 
Shea, a redshirt junior from Union, Ky., graduated this spring with a bachelor's degree in finance. He boasts a 3.75 GPA and is a three-time AAC All-Academic honoree. Shea leads the staff with 22 appearances out of the bullpen this season. He has 29 strikeouts in 30.0 innings pitched. 
 
Hegemann, a local product from Liberty Township, holds a 3.54 GPA and is majoring in health sciences. The junior outfielder has garnered AAC All-Academic recognition twice in his career. He leads the team with a .327 average (33-for-101) this season with 22 runs scored, 26 walks drawn and 10 stolen bases. 
 
Harker, a sophomore captain from Lebanon, Ind., boasts a 3.78 GPA as a sport administration major. He was named to the 2022 AAC All-Academic Team. The right-handed pitcher has eight starts in 16 appearances in 2023. He is second on the team in strikeouts (44) and innings pitched (51.0). 
 
To be considered, one must accumulate a cumulative GPA of 3.50 with at least a sophomore athletic standing, while being a starter or key reserve for their respective team.
 
The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball and softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 7 for baseball.
