Bearcats Drop Series Finale to Houston

The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell short against Houston, 7-6, in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon inside Schroeder Park.

HOUSTON, Texas – The University of Cincinnati baseball team fell short against Houston, 7-6, in its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon inside Schroeder Park.
 
The Cougars took two of three to claim the conference series. The Bearcats move to 24-31 overall and 10-14 in the American as they turn their attention the 2023 AAC Baseball Championship. 
 
The Bearcats were led by freshman Kyle Schupmann, who belted his third home run of the season on a three-run shot in the fifth. 
 
Ryan Nicholson smashed his second home run of the series and team-leading 15th of the season on a solo shot to left field. He now sits eighth in program history in career home runs (32) and is tied for seventh in the category for a single season (15). 
 
Alec Jones chipped in two hits and one run scored while Kameron Guidry drove in two runs. 

Graduate student Nick McClanahan (0-3) came out of the bullpen and took the loss. The right-hander went 2.2 innings and gave up one run with three strikeouts. Redshirt junior Zach Segal surpassed 100 career strikeouts in 1.2 innings in relief. 

// HOW IT HAPPENED 
The Bearcats got on the board in the top of the fourth. After back-to-back walks to start the inning, Guidry delivered an RBI infield single to plate the first run of the game. 

Houston quickly responded with a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame against starter Tommy Boba

Schupmann put Cincinnati back in front on a three-run home run to left field in the top of the fifth. The Cougars once again had a response for the Bearcats, scoring three runs on three hits in the home half of the fifth.

After a lead-off triple from Cole Harting in the sixth, Guiry provided a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one, 6-5. 

Nicholson tied up the ballgame on a solo shot to left field in the top of the eighth, but Houston reclaimed the lead on an RBI infield single in the home half of the frame to hold on for the 7-6 finale score.
