CLEARWATER, Fla. – The fifth-seeded Cincinnati baseball team will take on top seed and No. 15-ranked ECU in an elimination game on Wednesday at the 2023 American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla.
Cincinnati fell to UCF, 4-3, on a walk-off home run in the opening round of the AAC Championship on Tuesday morning. Ryan Nicholson belted a two-run shot to right field to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the ninth before a solo home run walked it off for the Knights.
ECU dropped a 12-11 extra-inning decision to USF in the second game of the day. The Bulls erased a four-run deficit in the ninth and went on to knock off the Pirates in 11 innings.
The tournament will be played in a double-elimination format through the semifinal round. The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to Friday and face the loser of No. 4 seed UCF and No. 8 seed USF.
Nicholson's two-run shot was his team-leading 16th home run of the season, and 33rd of his career. He has a .300 average (63-for-210) in 53 starts with 16 home runs, 41 RBI and 41 runs scored. He leads the club in hits (63), home runs (16), doubles (15), RBI (41) and multi-hit games (19).
Sophomore Sean Springer finished 2-for-3 against UCF with his first career triple. He is batting .412 (7-for-17) in his last five games with three multi-hit performances.
UC and ECU have met 49 times in program history, with the Pirates leading the all-time series 39-8-2. The Bearcats are looking to snap a 12-game losing skid to the Pirates, dating back to April 1, 2022.
The most recent postseason meeting between the two teams came last season on May 26, 2022 in the second round of the AAC Championship. ECU won the game, 15-5, in seven innings. Cincinnati is looking for its first postseason win over ECU in program history.
The Bearcats finished the 2023 campaign with a 10-14 mark in conference play. Cincinnati won three of its eight conference series on the season. UC took two of three from Memphis and Tulane and swept three games against USF.
Redshirt sophomore Kerrington Cross was named Second Team All-American Athletic Conference, while freshmen Griffin Hugus and Chase Horst were selected to the AAC Freshman All-Conference Team, the league announced on Monday.
