PARIS—University of Cincinnati track and field's Fred Moudani-Likibi will represent the French National Team at the 2023 World Athletic Championships announced by the French Athletics Federation on Monday.
Following invitations received from World Athletics and after approval by the selection committee of the French Athletics Federation Moudani-Likibi will compete for France in the shot put after qualifying based on his world ranking in the event.
"It feels amazing," Moudani-Likibi said. "I'm happy to see that all the struggle and hard work finally paid off. I'm really grateful to be on this fantastic team with all this great athletes to defend the colors of my country."
The Savigny-Le-Temple, France native is one of 78 (36 women, 42 men) athletes that make up the French national team for the world championships. Moudani-Likibi is the only French men's shot put thrower that qualified.
The World Athletic Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, Aug. 19-27, inside the National Athletics Centre. Moudnai-Likibi will compete on the opening day of the competition. The first round will beginning at 4:30 a.m. ET followed by the finals at 2:00 p.m. ET. More information about the World Athletic Championships can be found here.
Moudani-Likibi has had a record-breaking year to remember. In his first season as Bearcat he claimed both indoor and outdoor First Team All-American honors in the shot put for the first time in his career. He placed third overall at the NCAA outdoor championships, the highest ever finfish by a Bearcat in the event, and broke his own UC record with a personal best throw of 20.54m (67' 4.75").
Continuing the trend of breaking records during the indoor season, he broke the French National indoor shot put record with a throw of 20.51m (67" 3.5") besting Yves Niaré's 20.42m throw in 2009. He also broke both the indoor and outdoor AAC championship shot put records as he won the shot put conference title at each.
He was also named the AAC's men's outdoor field outstanding performer and earned AAC field athlete of the week honors three time during the year.
Moudani-Likibi has also had a busy summer on the international stage. In his most recent international event, he won the 2023 French Athletic Outdoor National Championships shot put title with a throw of 19.84m (65' 1.25").
