CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell to UCF in its Big 12 Conference opener on Thursday night in Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats suffered a four-set loss to the Knights to move to 7-4, 0-1 on the season.
Cincinnati's middle blockers Ligia Williams and Zeta Washington combined for 24 kills and 10 blocks. The duo helped UC hold a 10-8 advantage in blocks.
Graduate student Carly Skrabak recorded a match-high 24 digs – 11 more than any other player on the court.
The Knights, who rank second in the country in aces per set, finished with 10 aces in the match.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | UCF went on a 6-0 run to lead 9-5. The Knights used another 4-0 spurt to extend their lead to nine (18-9). The Bearcats pulled within seven after a 3-0 run (20-13) but would not get any closer for the remainder of the set, 25-17. UCF hit .394 and had four aces in the frame.
SET 2 | Three of Cincinnati's first four points were blocks. Back-to-back kills by Elissa Alcantara forced UCF to take a timeout (10-7). The Knights responded with a 5-0 spurt before Williams put down three straight kills for UC (16-15). UCF ended the frame on a 5-1 scoring run to win the stanza, 25-21.
SET 3 | The Bearcats scored four straight to lead 11-10. The two teams then traded points until a 4-0 run gave UC a three-point lead (19-16). The Knights responded to even the set at 20 apiece. The Bearcats' middle blockers came up clutch down the stretch, scoring three of UC's final four points (25-22).
SET 4 | UCF jumped out to an early 9-6 advantage. The Bearcats then used a 5-1 run to reclaim the lead (15-12). UCF rattled off five straight before back-to-back points for UC evened up the set (18-18). The fourth stanza saw 13 ties and seven lead changes as UCF held on to win the frame, 25-23.
