Walker, Allwein Lead Cincinnati at Roy Griak Invitational

Graduate student Maddie Walker and freshman Gianni Allwien and led the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams on Friday at the Roy Griak Invitational on the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.— Graduate student Maddie Walker and freshman Gianni Allwein and led the University of Cincinnati men's and women's cross country teams on Friday at the Roy Griak Invitational on the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course.
 
Walker was the first Bearcat to cross the finish line in the women's gold 6k as she placed 48th with a time of 22:12.6. The Bavatia, Ohio native finished as Cincinnati's top finished for the first time this season. She achieved the feat three times last season.
 
Cincinnati's season-opening meet leader, sophomore Claire Curtsinger, was next to finish. She placed 58th overall with a personal best 6k time of 22:26.3.
 
Following Curtsinger, was the freshmen pair of Bella Graham and Amber Carter. Graham finished with a time of 23:18.7 (98th) and Carter completed the race with a time of 23:25.6 (108th).
 
Sophomore Emmy Sager was the fifth scorer for the women's team as she recorded a time of 23:52.6 (126th).  
 
On the men's side, Allwein used a big final kick, moving up 20 spots in the final 3,000m to place 67th overall in the men's gold 8k with a time of 25:35.4. The Cincinnati native was the Bearcats' top finisher in his first career appearance as a Bearcat.
 
Joining Allwein at the front of the Bearcat pack was fellow classmate Thomas Ashby. Ashby crossed the finish line at the 25:43.7 mark and finished 75th overall.
 
Sophomore Seth Elking was the Cincinnati runner to appear at the finish line as he placed right behind Ashby in 79th with a time of 25:48.5.
 
Rounding out the men's scorers was graduate student Tyler Wirth and freshman Isaac Schachleiter, who completed the race less than a second apart. Wirth placed 86th with a time of 25:55.4 and Schachleiter finished 87th with a time of 25:56.1.
 
The UC men's team placed 13th overall scoring 338 points, while the women's finished 14th overall scoring 387 points. Nationally ranked No. 22/29 Cal Baptist claimed both the women's and men's titles.
