PROVO, Utah – Redshirt sophomore tight end Chamon Metayer hauled in the first two touchdown catches of his career and the Cincinnati football team held a 498-295 edge in total yards, but fell, 35-27, to BYU at LaVell Edwards Stadium in its first Big 12 road contest in school history.

Metayer had touchdown receptions of 27 yards and 23 yards and finished with three grabs for 59 yards.

The Bearcats rushed for 242 yards and held BYU to 70 on the ground, but turned the ball over twice, including a pick-six in the first quarter and a mishandled punt return late in the third quarter.

Despite holding a commanding 254 to 107 edge in total yards in the first half, UC trailed 14-10 at halftime.

"It was crazy," Satterfield said. "The first half in particular, we basically had the ball the entire way and dominated time of possession. We should have been up by 10 points, but we weren't, and that's the way football is. You have to make plays when they're there, and BYU is very good at that. They made plays when they had to make them. That drive before halftime was huge momentum in getting that touchdown."

Cincinnati's defense forced BYU to punt on its first four possessions, but BYU quarterback Kedon Slovis completed three quick passes on an 82-yard touchdown drive right before halftime. Wide receiver Darius Lassiter's 22-yard score with six seconds remaining the second quarter gave the Cougars the 4-point lead at the break.

After Cincinnati punted to open the second half, BYU marched 73 yards down the field over five plays and took a 21-10 lead on a 29-yard touchdown run by Cougars' running back LJ Martin at the 11:38 mark in the third quarter.

Cincinnati answered with a 14-play drive that was capped by a 22-yard field goal from Carter Brown.

BYU fired right back when Slovis evaded a sack and found wide receiver Chase Roberts for a 59-yard touchdown to give BYU a 28-13 advantage with at the 2:53 mark in the third quarter.

The Bearcats closed the gap to 8 points when Metayer hauled in an acrobatic 23-yard touchdown reception – his second of the night – with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.

Cincinnati followed its touchdown by forcing a three-and-out, but Cincinnati punt returner Braden Smith misplayed the 53-yard punt, tipped the ball and the Cougars recovered, giving BYU the ball at the UC 15-yard line. Martin powered in a 1-yard score a few plays later to give the Cougars a 35-20 advantage with 12:41 left in the game.

Braden Smith's leaping, contested 31-yard touchdown with 26 seconds left brought Cincinnati within 35-27. BYU recovered the ensuing onside kick to preserve the victory.

BYU took a 7-0 lead at 8:22 in the first quarter on a 42-yard pick-six of Cincinnati quarterback Emory Jones by Cougars cornerback Jakob Robinson.

"It comes down to those turnovers," Satterfield said. "Emory (Jones) on the first one had some miscommunication with the wide receivers on zone coverage. You obviously can't have that costly mistake that gave them seven points in a first half that we dominated."

On the Bearcats' next possession, Jones' pass to tight end Peyton Singletary was dropped on 4th-and-1.

After forcing another BYU punt, Cincinnati took over at its own 10 and marched 90 yards over 17 plays to tie the game, 7-7, on Metayer's first career touchdown catch, a 26-yarder at the 10:59 mark in the second quarter. The season-long drive was nearly seven minutes long (6:49).
