CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team fell to South Carolina in five sets on Friday night inside Fifth Third Arena.
After leading 2-0 in the match, the Bearcats dropped the final three sets (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 20-25, 9-15). The Gamecocks finished with 21 blocks, including 13 in their sets won.
Graduate student Jadyn Bauss led Cincinnati with 21 kills and 18 digs for her second double-double. She has finished with double-digit kills in every match this season. Reigning Big 12 Rookie of the Week Zeta Washington chipped in 19 kills at a .302 clip and seven blocks.
In her first career start, freshman defensive specialist Kayla Hostetler notched a match-high 19 digs – the first double-digit dig performance of her career.
Setter Katelyn Lefler dished out 55 assists and 18 digs for her fifth double-double of the season while libero Carly Skrabak added 17 digs on defense.
// HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Cincinnati jumped out to a 6-2 lead before USC tied up the set at seven apiece. UC then went on a 4-0 run, highlighted by three kills from Bauss (16-13). After South Carolina cut its deficit to one, Cincinnati rattled off three straight points for set point (24-20). The Bearcats held on the win the first set, 25-23.
SET 2 | The Gamecocks went on a 6-2 run to force a UC timeout at 8-4. The Bearcats trailed by as many as five before a 6-1 run evened the match at 14 apiece. Down 22-18, the Bearcats stormed back to take the second set in extra points, 27-25.
SET 3 | After UC jumped out to an early lead, USC scored 10 straight points to own a 15-9 advantage. With Hostetler behind the service line, the Bearcats responded with a 7-0 run to pull within one. Cincinnati looked to have one more run, tying up the set at 23 apiece, but the Gamecocks scored the final two points (25-23).
SET 4 | UC scored the first five points of the fourth set. The Gamecocks responded with 11 straight to lead 18-11. The deficit proved too large to overcome as the match went to a fifth set, 25-20.
SET 5 | The Gamecocks used a 4-0 spurt to lead as the two teams traded sides (9-5). The Bearcats pulled within three but would not get any closer for the remainder of the set, falling 15-9.
